If more Artists new these secrets, they could manage themselves, get a lot more exposure and only hire a manager when they absolutely need to. More importantly, they could hire accountants.

Are you more intelligent and more creative than them? Then why do you need them? Are they more intelligent? Were it not for them would you have anywhere to sell your writing, art, music, anywhere to perform, would anyone think you were really very interesting at all? You need to be more like them. They not only have the discipline and self-respect to crunch the numbers and create systems for you to function in, but they have the creativity to convince people to pay attention to you. If it were not for these “boring business drones” and their ability to promote and sell your “creativity”, no one would really think anything you had to share was worth much, at all. They do the same thing you do, only in a different way. They are not only business people, but they are also artists.
They actually use both hemispheres of their brains in ways that you do not. They can not only do their jobs, but if they’d realize it, they could do yours too, and cut you right out of the equation. Seriously, you should freak out a little bit about this and get your act more together, try to learn from this. They do the same thing you do, only in a different way. (Worth the repetition)
The last thing they want is for you to understand this, because then you might not need them as much. And you would get to keep more of your own money instead of giving it to them. Why not take what they know and make it a part of your daily schedule? You can do it, for sure. It is a lot of what you do anyway, so understand that it’s just a different process for what you do all day as an artist anyway.
Is linguistic dogma killing you?
How about not getting hung up on language, and not being offended by synonyms? Is it really worth cutting so many people off from what you create or provide just because there are certain words you hate? Why not open yourself up to more and more people? What if you are really providing something useful that could help change everything?
I remember a meeting I was in once. It was for a local food co-op in the neighborhood where I lived at that time. Somehow these people pulled this place off, but they certainly did not do it with the quickness or efficacy they could have due to their very bizarre dogma about the use of language. I remember sitting in that meeting, listening, trying to get a feel for things and seeing if there was going to be a way for me to be useful. Someone brought up the importance of Public Relations and Marketing, and how they wanted to be involved in that aspect of the business. The person who brought that up got shot down by the rude authoritarian who was running the meeting because they used the word “marketing”. “Please refrain from using words like marketing and public relations, we are not capitalists and this is not a business, it’s a cooperative, that’s what co-op means”. Now, first of all, yes they are marketers, and yes they have good public relations, because they have been in business for quite some time now. You can call what you do whatever you want. Call it “outreach”, call it “promotions”, call it “relationship building” or “communications”, but you have a reputation and you have to get the word out as well as get feedback. That is marketing and public relations in any language. Yes, they are capitalists, and yes they are business people. Yes, they are.
Have fun with semantics and pretend you are not a business if it makes you feel better, but whichever model you use for your business, it is a business model even if the structure you choose is a co-op. And whatever you call “communications” you are communicating to the MARKET, genius. It’s one of the oldest words in the history of written language.
That co-op is alive and well and all the people running it make the decisions, including the weird lady who elbowed the neighbor out of the meeting by controlling the semantics, and she makes a decent living, too. Sounds like a successful capital enterprise to me. Good for them, although when I am back in that neck of the woods I shop somewhere else, where the owners do not snap at their neighbors for using synonyms. My choice, thank you free enterprise. Who knows what kind of excellent opportunities were cut off from that group due to such petty closed-mindedness? On the other hand, what this proves is that the people at that co-op are very competitive and territorial people and that is why they have been successful. Even though they decided to limit their audience, they made it. They know their market and they took care of business. They chose not to cast a broad net. That works for them and they are happy with it.
The point is that if you want broad success, don’t do that to yourself, and don’t kid yourself about what you are and what you do to thrive. The world of doing things in an economy is a market. It’s not a bad word. There are some pretty good entrepreneurs out there who have such vivid imaginations that they fancy themselves communists or something. The world is a weird place full of people with all sorts of delusions; don’t let bizarre thinking limit your success, it’s easy to have marginal success, because most people are marginal.
Blaming business for greed is like blaming blood for mosquitoes
You see these people holding up signs that say “capitalism failed” and whatnot. It’s true to an extent, since big business has co-opted the governments, and uses them to control and centralize the economy there have been many many problems. Large centralized economies fail every single time. There are not really any examples of debt-free, entrepreneur friendly free-enterprise economies left in the world. If the right wing is not screwing it up, the left wing is.
Many of the people out there “in the struggle”, preaching the end of free-enterprise and capitalism are just as greedy opportunistic as the wall streeters and central banks who pulled the rug out from under the economy. The biggest problem they have is that they are not the ones who performed the ‘coup. Believe it. Their problem is not that there was a ‘coup, their problem is that they were not the ones who did it.
“What does this have to do with my art?” you ask. Well, a lot, because it helps you identify what you can control, and that is your business, both literally and figuratively, you get to mind your business.
How many times have you said “I could do so much better if I could afford to pay someone to do all the things I hate”? Well, this sounds weird, but sometimes you are doing things you love when you do things you hate, and you do the things you hate as you do the things you love.
- “I love writing my poems and stories, but I hate writing sales letters.”
- “I love being social and going to parties with people but I hate making phone calls and talking to industry people.”
- “I love rehearsing and collaborating with fellow artists, but I hate business meetings.”
“It’s not the same thing” you say? Yes it is. It is to your brain. To your brain, physical actions are physical actions, because your brain is a physical organ. Your mind on the other hand has all sorts of imaginary constructs implanted in it to keep you from succeeding.
Can you see the point here? Have you ever considered that a CD cover is really just a business brochure? Have you ever realized that passing out flyers for your band’s next show is a marketing campaign? Am I taking the joy out of it for you? Guess what, if you don’t face this pretty soon you’ll have to get out of your creative activity, because things need to run. If you are not reminding people that you exist, they forget you. Go bag groceries.
You may as well learn how to do these things efficiently. Here’s the good part, why would you let a boring business person book your life when you can do it with flare and artistry that is unique to you? This way you may be able to save up enough cash to pay someone to be your assistant or your accountant, NOT your manager.
Let me ask you this, Artist: Do you realize that while all these people out there are having all this turbulence and struggle, stirring things up, pulling out rugs, panicking, preaching, and with all the perception preening by the masters of media that you have been a productive, genuine, creative person who is actually seeking to add value to the world rather than make hay from the destruction of values? Now, who do you think, honestly, can do a better job booking your life than you? You need tools.
TOOLS to trick your brain: Group your physical actions, because your brain does not know the difference between art and business, those definitions are constructs, but physical actions are physical actions, and the brain is a physical organ.
- The best time to write the copy for promotional material is right after you have finished writing your song lyrics for your latest tune, finished your latest chapter, or wrote your best jokes. Keep your writing with your writing, which includes emails. Writing is a physical activity.
- The best times to have in-person meetings or make phone calls on behalf of your projects are right after your rehearsals and collaboration sessions. Keep your social activity grouped together as much as you can. Singing with a group, collaborating, phone calls and meetings are social, physical activities. It’s all the same to your brain.
- If you are in visual arts, then it follows to create your promotional graphics at the tail end of a long creative session. Creating graphics is a physical activity, regardless of whether it is in the realm of arts or business.
The point being made here is that the human brain likes to focus on one physical activity at a time, because the human brain is a physical organ. So see your daily actions as physical activities and design your schedule accordingly as much as you can… especially putting your promotional activity directly following your creative activity, so your brain is at its best as you do these things. Your brain does not know the difference between business actions and artistic actions, the brain is an organ, and it is not your mind. Your mind makes a distinction between these things, not your brain.
Just like physical actions, thoughts need to be organized well.
It helps to have one place to keep everything. All your work, whether it is your art or your promotional material (are we seeing less of a difference?), it needs a place to be organized, and it needs a place to be showcased. You should be able to control it all from one place and make whichever materials you desire public, private, semi-private, collaborative, or whatever you want. Social media is more important now, but at the same time, it can be fairly incomplete, and designed toward a short attention span. The good things in life take a little more work than that.
You “need a place to go”. You need a place to put your materials, to organize your materials and showcase your materials. Regardless of the function of those materials, you need a place to keep them, work on them and share them.
