The New Word to Describe the Life of a Writer

conundrumnal: The state of being in a persistent paradox; A situation presenting a consistent conundrum

American Politicians  spend too much time raising money. They don’t have time to make good policy, or to care how it affects us.

If I want to spend more time writing, I am going to have to figure out how to sell my book, but if I spend my time selling it, I won’t have time to write. One of the things I like to do is make up new words. There are a few in my book. Today I want to introduce you to the word conundrumnal, because this problem of having to spend time selling books and not being able to write them is conundrumnal. I’m not saying this is original thought, but I don’t see that word in use. Certainly not in dictionaries.

My book is now in the Premium Catalogue at Smashwords, which means I can officially stop calling myself a Writer and start calling myself an Author if I feel like it. It might be a little pretentious,  but probably not presumptuous. It would be pretentious to call myself an author if I started referring to myself as such before at least selling a thousand books. You get the point though. I wrote a book, seventy two thousand plus words.

Below is a list of ways people all over the world can get my book if they find clicking the link above to be too easy. I am intrigued by this. What a great system Smashwords made. Technically, pretty much everyone on Earth can get my book now. What if they did? Then I could spend more time writing.

Book Titles: I laughed into mine

Book Title

At some point during the third or fourth revision I was searching the internet for music, just trying to relax an overstimulated mind and maybe find some inspiration. I was listening to Beatles songs that are somewhat rare, like demos and outtakes. I heard the book title in an interview with John Lennon and Paul McCartney, where the interviewer was asking them questions about youth culture, and what, if any good they thought they could bring to the youth of their era.

Many people try to be conscious about what’s important, and what, if any good they might do. We all think too much, and wouldn’t it be a lovely world if we could all settle our heads with more music and humor, and other good things. The original, working title for this book was ‘Stellar Gas’.

You can find the entire, very much worth the listen Lennon and McCartney interview on Youtube

This is an excerpt:

Interviewer: Let’s stick to the young people, and to the areas that you think are most fruitful to try to help in. I mean, again, I asked before where you thought young people were going and you said maybe there’ll be a reaction to what they have now. How does this relate to the real world, as you see it, to issues of war and peace and family and country?
John Lennon: All issues are relative. So it relates like that. It’s all just relative to each other. War… and vegetables… It’s all just relative, you know. So there’s relativity and absolute, and that’s how it relates.
Paul McCartney: That’s great Johnny.
Interviewer: That’s kind of hard though, for some people, to interpret you.
John Lennon: Well, if they can’t interpret it, maybe they will later, or come to their own conclusions, but that’s the way I think it is.

War and Vegetables: A Chronicle of the Last Gas Station is Available

corporatism-rigged-economy-war-vegetables-Preface: The devastation left in the wake of corporatism in much of the world was a war zone Even in the US it seemed like a war zone. The rights of individuals, their properties, communities, and small businesses were under attack, not mere metaphor in some cases. Solutions, some so simple, were suppressed in favor of archaic, toxic, and inefficient technologies Politicians enabled these policies and the results, and they worked a TV like a dancer’s prop, feigning opposition There were so many of us, and so few of them. Somehow they made us feel powerless. Perhaps it was the weaponry the constant trauma of fear porn, and the fake food, all helped along by the too slowly dissipating apparitions of TV projection. Regardless, it was a con. The Millenials were next, with the Public Record in the palms of their hands. www.war&veggies.com

The use of artistic license in writing

I’m explaining that I am a novice astronomer and that some my use of astronomy in my book War and Vegetables is artistic license, and incongruous for effect. The order in which the events in the book occur are accurate per month, but not per year. Some of the events would not happen in succession in the same year but do occur in the months that they are presented in different years.
I think a book where the year jumps around according to astronomical events would be a lot of fun; The events as time signatures indicating flashbacks and flash-forwards. I however, am not the writer interested in doing that.  At least not right now. Maybe some genius will steal the idea from me, if it has not already been done.
So, for Dr. Tyson, and/ or any purists, sorry. It’s not out of disinterest or disrespect.
Try to have a really good day anyhow. :)

Writers who don’t need editors

Have you ever seen a book that had a typo, or some kind of grammatical mistake and you noticed it? You probably have, and you remember it. That is why writers need Editors. Seriously, don’t kid yourself. I am never satisfied with my work, not even the work on my blog. I would never think about putting anything out for serious release without getting some outside help.

A colleague was telling me about a recent discussion he was having with some fellow writers and some of them were ridiculing the idea of having an Editor. I do not know them, they might have had a bad experience or something, but really, they are kidding themselves.

Any serious writer has at least 2 sets of eyeballs besides their own look at their work before they release anything serious. (link)

poere over you work and have someone else do it too

There is a difference between Editing and proofing. All Editors proof, but proofing is not Editing.

Proofing is raw-checking something, without software. Poring over the material word by word and correcting spelling,  punctuation, spacing and grammar. There is no real Editing. It is simply taking the text as it is and making those types of fixes, with no changes of structure or formatting of any kind. Proofing can happen before or after the edit.. sometimes both! Sometimes a second person proofs or finishes, after the Editor does the edit.

Editing is deeper. Editing includes deconstruction where necessary, flow, adjusting syntax and looking for ways to increase the efficiency of the read. Many great thinkers and visionaries simply cannot write in a way that the average reader can follow them, so they need help breaking down long thoughts and sentences into shorter ones, and usually a little bit of help determining paragraph breaks. Also, the writing of most people is “patchy”, it may change in pattern based on the mood they are in, how tired they are, whether they missed that cup of coffee, or any range of influences. Consistency is important, and so is the quality of having that “tumbling” effect where one sentence leads to the next and does not let the reader off the pages without regret, and the impatience of wanting to get back to it as soon as possible. A good Editor can locate those moments in a writer’s style and help make sure there is that sort of consistency and flow as much as possible.

Sometimes writers with vivid imaginations really do not know how to form an honest sentence. It does not mean they do not have thoughts, or that they can’t think well, it can be that they are just not adept with organizing their thoughts all the time. There is nothing wrong with admitting this and getting some help.

Finally, a good Editor does something important when they edit. They are a boon to Publishers because they pre-format the work by getting it into the correct page style for the type of work it is. All a good formatter has to do now is tweak the page formatting and the kerning (the character spacing) to make the work flow from page to page and to make it easier on the readers eyes. The more work you do for the publisher, the more likely they are to choose you.. and an Editor wants you to be chosen, because then you will become their repeat business, as your Publisher becomes repeat business for you.

Any serious writer has at least 2 sets of eyeballs besides their own look at their work before they release anything serious. (link)

Some notes about caretaking: the commodification of time

Most of the physical work that needs to be done has to do with critter control.

There are many feral cats, many rodents, lots of skunks, many Deer, and the occasional Bear. The evidence and damage from Bears usually comes early in the Spring when they are waking up.  Then we never see them again all summer.

I have never needed to use poison for the skunks, although there were times I came close to making that call because it was getting to be too much.  Skunks do not get the message that they are not welcome, unless you do something that deters them. Throw a couple of rocks at the cats and they remember to steer clear of the front and the porch.

A light connected to the timer, pointed to shine under the front deck will keep he skunks away.  They are nocturnal and do not like light very much. When there is a skunk outside walking near the house, it smells like it is inside. Use a yellow bug light in the fixture that is shining under the porch to attract fewer bugs.  If you do not do this, you will learn your lesson… fair warning.

Keeping the garbage under control is also very important, and frankly, probably the most important thing

The smell of the garbage attracts critters, again, critter control. The smell also wafts around into the screen door and under the eaves into Apt. 2.

Check the garbage twice per day. Once in the afternoon to be sure that a tenant has not just thrown garbage in there without using the cans, which they do all the time.  Also, you might have to break down cardboard and open the bags they use and crush the plastic bottles so all the trash will fit. You can ask the tenants to do this but very few of them do it, and even the ones who do usually give up on that after a couple of weeks. I usually separate the cardboard and burn it every two weeks. This helps be sure I am leaving enough room to get everyone’s garbage into the cans in front of the house. You have to do this because of critter control. If you put plain garbage bags out there without cans and the cover on the cans, the crows, the feral cats, and the rodents will make you pay… every time. You will be cleaning up the garbage they spread all over the road, EVERY TIME. There is no reason for me to make this up. What would be the point?  Summer is rife with life around here and they love stinky garbage.

Also check it at night, before retiring. Make sure it is locked down.  You can tell the tenants to remember but you are the only one who can make yourself remember. You have to be sure that the garbage bin stays locked down and tight at night, because cats get in there and scare the heck out of you when they jump out, thankfully I never got scratched. It takes a long time to train people about keeping the garbage bin pin in place, but cats know instinctively how to get in there without being trained… And they come every night as part of their routine hunting and gathering to see if they can get in. 11:30-11:45, every night I hear noise by the bin, cats. If the cats get in there, you may not know it right away, or at all. But pretty much assume that if you do not lock it down over night that they have been in there.

You will know if Bears have been in there because they just take the whole bags to the other side of the hot-tub room and dump everything out, so once every couple of days check on the other side of the hot tub room for garbage. If there are Bears around, that is where they hang out, in the lot next door to the hot tub room, it does not happen very often, but if you walk around over there, along the property line, you will see Bear feces from time to time, again, usually only early in the season. Although this year, 2012, there were quite a few Bear sightings. Sometimes the garbage that gets dumped out over there isn’t even from here, it’s from some other place. So be sure to check that area because the tenants will not tell you, they don’t care, they’ll let garbage sit over there for weeks and not tell you, it’s not their job, they don’t have to, and they are not going to.  If they leave their garbage out, and it gets strewn around by critters, they will not clean it up; at least don’t assume they will. This might seem like some kind of easy job but you are a Hotel Groundskeeper as much as anything else. You have to clean up after them, and they know it, and you will do it. I GUARANTEE you will be cleaning up the messes of other people so it does not look like you live in a ghetto, GUARANTEED.

The garbage truck comes Tuesday, by anywhere from 9 am-10:30 am. I get the cans out there by 8:30 and if I have bags, I keep them in the bin and run them out to the truck so the birds and other critters don’t get into them.

Make sure the Hot Tub House stays locked

People store their things in there, there is a decommissioned Winter hot tub, and on top of that, there is a phone. The hot tub house has been broken into in the past; I have had to fix the door, probably just because someone knows there is a phone in there and wanted to use it. You have to take this seriously. Not just because it’s private property, but because the other line of that phone number belongs to the owner, and the caretaker lives on site. If someone is using that phone for crimes, they can get traced back to that line, and the caretaker could become a suspect in something. TAKE KEEPING THE HOT TUB ROOM LOCKED SERIOUSLY. There is a lot of poverty and weirdness that goes with that around here. Yes, there are wingnuts and tweakers and bored kids who are future criminals, just like anywhere else.

Lawn mowing

The best timing for mowing the lawn is about every 10-14 days.  In June and July it can get pretty long in 10 days and it doesn’t look great, but ten days is the pollen cycle for the insects and I like to keep them busy and not kill them off. I never use chemicals on the lawn for anything, or fertilizer. I have noticed that even if the lawn is short, the tenants have rarely used it for anything.  I have never mowed the lawn more than 5 times an entire Summer, once in June, twice in July, and once or twice in August.

Mow the front all the way to the street on both sides, and next to the Building. Mow the back, and make a path the width of two lawnmowers all the way to the back road where the big stone is, the guy who lives across that road is weird and possessive about mowing all the way to the road because he owns that part that is overgrown, and there is no need to spend money on his lawn. The property markers are all obvious back there. But a path to the road is nice. There is a triangular area next to the property where the tree is that is not all this property, but mow it anyway, it provides clearance from the wild animals, and there is a nice shade tree back there, just do it. Then make a path from the other side of the french drain, around the pine tree, along the side of the hot tub house. Make that 1.5 – 2 width of a lawn mower. Now you have a clear path all the way around the property to walk around and see everything you need to see for security and maintenance and what not.

In front of the building, right in the driveway in front of the rock garden and also next to the empty lot is a bounty of chamomile. There are other edibles too, but they are more obscure. When you get up in the AM and there is dew, and it smells sweet and sleepy out there, that is fresh, raw organic chamomile. It’s a very nice thing to smell, and to keep around. It peaks for about 5 days in late June I think. Don’t mow that!! Pick it and store it and give it away. This year it was SUPER heavy, so it probably will be from now on.

 Weeds

I planted mustard in the rock garden this year and it completely ended any serious weed problem. Mustard outgrows weeds, it takes up their root space and it repels many insects. This is not the invasive wild mustard, this is non-threatening, good old fashioned Mustard Greens. It is not the prettiest thing in life, but you can eat it and it keeps it all low maintenance. Between that and all the other edibles out here you never have to buy salad from the store unless you want to.

 Wasps and Hornets

You have to walk around regularly and check for wasp and hornet nests. They are everywhere and we do use chemical sprays on those. The tenants will wait until it is really bad before they say anything.  Walk around and look under the eaves and under the decking and stairwells at least once a week, but twice a week in August when it is really dry.

Grilling

Grilling is permitted on the decks, but the decks are really dry. I always tell the tenants and remind them to keep a bucket or pot of water near their grills at all times when they are using it. Hardly anyone grills, but when they do I remind them.  I have never had to tell anyone twice about that. The image of a wood framed-building burning down is sticky.  Be vivid and descriptive about how quickly dry wood burns when you remind them.

Lights

The security lights are on a timer. You have to adjust it based on the time of year. It changes fast between Winter and Spring, and Autumn and Winter, especially with Daylight Savings Time. It’s really nice to have that light out there. It makes the place more secure, and it keeps a lot of critters away. It is easy to lose track of setting the timer as the seasons change. The lights on the hot tub house are motion sensor lights. Those are nice too. It might be nice to hook up another light on the other side of the building in the front. It would be easy to do with a cord connected to the T connector that is coming out of the bottom of the timer, or do it proper with some Romex coming from the outlet box.

Fire pit

The fire pit is the real deal. It is not a joke and it exceeds the building and fire codes around here.  It is the nicest fire pit around here for miles and I am very proud of it.  (link). Keep the bottom clear with a shovel. The bottom is concrete with some rock drainage, when you are scraping concrete with the shovel that is the bottom.  Use it for burning refuse or having a nice fire. It is deep, so if you want to have a warming fire in the evening, fill the bottom with rocks. The reason it’s not filled with rocks is for burning refuse. Refuse needs to have a deep fire to be safe.  A warming fire should be shallower so it radiates. If you start a real honest fire in there in the evening, and let the coals smolder all night… which is fine because it is deep, the ground all around the pit will be a thermal mass. The ground will still be warm and you will have embers 24 hours later. That thing is no joke. If it was lined with ceramic it would be a proper cook oven… for sure. I do not recommend cooking in there now though. The concrete and blocks could leech toxins into food. Cooking above it would be fine, but not in it. A cook spit would be perfect for this, and incredible. (Picture of a really nice cook spit)

Yesterday’s post about how really, really good you are

Today’s post is my 26th NaBloPoMo post

We fought for you until you woke up

This is a dream you had, and then it came true

We were in the same position you were in, and then we were telling you just like someone told us, that’s all. You knew the truth, and you slowly internalized it. Then, you heard it one more time and you acted on it. It’s never easy for anyone to admit being hoodwinked their whole life. We were ready for you, and since we were not partisan and political, we never said “I told you so”, because you were the next link in the chain to break free. Everyone was looking forward to your efforts and we were not going to ruin that by being spiteful and arrogant. Someone told us once, too. Then we told you.

The work you did was amazing, and it helped change everything and they thanked you for telling them, and for doing what you did to wake them up.

your beautiful, awkward epiphany.

i'm glad you had a good time at the mall.... but.

Yesterdays post about Black Friday

Black Friday is for Stupid People who Suck

Oh my gosh, how awful. I have not watched the news today but I wonder how many people got trampled. What a lot of embarrassing weirdness about our “culture”.

They are not relevant until they wait in line overnight to buy shit they don’t need, with borrowed fake money that they don’t really have, from some offshore private bank, owned by people who have utter contempt for us. Then, the day after the day they are supposed to be thankful for Family, they abandon them to buy them garbage, so all they can afford to feed them is genetically mutated food. America, you are a giant clown in space

Shop till you drop, or till you drop someone else.

What if our lives were about something really good instead?

Americans used to -make things- and disseminate them all over the world through business, and I’m not talking about weapons. The nature of Human life is to create.

Do you realize Santa hates you if you don’t conform?Santa hates you and he's a fat bastardHe took a really cool season, with all kinds of cool stories, and turned it into an expensive fiasco that helps prop up the lying media and the war machine.

Hanging around the house with Family all day telling cool stories with really great values should be enough. How wonderful. That sounds really lovely.

Wasted Treasure: Repurposing windows

4 sliding glass doors

I do not believe that there are people who want to see this go to waste. There are so many things that can be done with old sliding glass doors. It’s wrong, it’s just sick and wrong and that’s all it is.

Here is a Brief list, a BRIEF list of what can be done with these:

  • Windows for greenhouses
  • Solar hot water heater
  • passive solar convection heat
  • Gigantic powerless food dehydrator

So yeah, try to get an idea, will ya? Not to mention just making a large window for your camp, or a mobile home; strip the glass and use the panes independently, since they are double pane. If I had a place to use them there is NO WAY I would walk away from this..

Ok? So yeah, that’s my post today. And speaking of energy, here, check out this link and get a little ebook that will tell you all about how your TV is a liar about energy (I know, big surprise right?), and this one with info about A.L.E.C and about who was -really- behind the Solyndra scandal, and guess what, it was not Heir Savior like the Republicans claim (I know, big surprise right? politicians lying). And I wrote these things in 2006, so whatever, catch up will ya!

I am doing a blog post per day all month, hopefully. Inspired by NaBloPoMo. This will be a good motivation for me to format some more ebooks. This is post #14.

Make your skills and experience work for you

I wrote  this blog post a couple of weeks ago describing my desire to find an illustrator for some short stories. Well, I have been working with the small publishing company that I mentioned and IT IS FUN. Editing fantasy time travel novels with elves and orcs and gods and crazy humans who don’t know how they got there… good lord. So fun.  Just  doing what you love can make your skills and experience work for you. This means I feel pretty good sending them my stuff to get drawn and illustrated

You are not alone in your ability to see through illusions. There is a small class of people who take what you earn and use it for an apparatus to colonize you & suppress your brilliance. There is another class, much larger, who don’t need violence, because we have numbers. You are a part of the larger class. Study hard. You are getting ready to win.

Novel Excerpts: Gimme S'more

This is a graphic I am using for my novel excerpts

I was finally able to get the first of my novel excerpts completed. It’s not long, it’s only 6 pages, and it does not encapsulate the plots. It’s merely a character development piece. These parts of a book are important. When you are doing a long book, it is good to have humor for humor’s sake. Everything doesn’t have to be crucial. These parts of books set-up and tease for other segments that may actually be significant. If the book is heady, and gives the reader a lot to think about then it’s nice to give them a break with something light and fun.

A nice short, sweet post today. I have been busy building stuff here at the Chalet I take care of, and editing a graphic novel script as a side gig.  I’m pooped and have more editing to do.

I am doing one post per day for the month of November, hopefully. Inspired by NaBloPoMo.

Circus Eve, Election 2012: Election Projection, send in the clowns because they are going to win again.

Obama started using drones, not only overseas, but in the United States as well. Romney has promised to pick up the pace. That is a signal to let you know that after the election, Obama is going to pick up the pace.Today, with me being busy making sure I am happy with the excerpt I’m preparing,  it’s just about pictures, and whatever links you find in this post. On Tuesday, election day, tomorrow email subscribers will receive the excerpt from my novel called Stellar Gas.

I have been super busy and I am really happy when I am writing alot.  I am doing a blog post per day all month… hopefully.  Inspired by NaBloPoMo. This will be a good motivation for me to format more ebooks, cause oh yeah.. I got ‘em baby. This is post #5. Can i do it?

All the ebooks that I have listed so far have been changed to 99¢. I have actually sold a couple of them.  From now on, only 99¢ ebooks on kindled commutes, unless I list someone else. Speaking of which, I have a nice inquiry from another blogger who is getting into ebooks. He is going to be a guest on my blog as soon as he is ready. I do not even have his blog address right now or I would give it to you.

Ok, so that is it for today. How would you feel if I asked you to share this site with your friends via email? Or use your facebook account to share it around today. I am averaging about 20 visits per day, but I need to get it up to 100. Once you reach 100 visits per day consistently, that is when you can do some things to make it -really- grow.

Also, never be afraid to ask me for help with your internet needs, I like building websites and using facebook applications to build audience. I do that stuff all the time and I am happy to help you as well.  Probably alot less expensive than other people. Especially if you are a subscriber of mine.. I mean c’mon? Are you kidding, whudd’ya think this is, anyway? A circus?

Well, they must think we are bozos if they expect us to put up with these choices much longer. So till 2016, when the first non-Party affiliated President since George Washington is elected, send in the clowns.

i want a future where i am taught to question everything. where me and my friends are not brainwashed to be taught stone age myths and are not brainwashed to believe it is honorable to die for you because you are too small minded to believe in peace over warI love you America.

Writing for graphic novels and seeking illustrators for short stories

The process of seeking an illustrator for my short stories and graphic series/ novel has been difficult. There are so many incredible illustrators out there, but even getting to the point where I can send them my writing for consideration almost never happens. They are either represented by agents, or they are just so swamped with work that they don’t even want it on their desks right now. Good for them, bad for me.

During this process, I have learned a great deal. I have even found a small publisher who is seeking an Editor. I took advantage of that opportunity by doing a test edit and I hope it comes to fruition. If it does, I will not only do what I love for a living as a reader and writer, but potentially find a place for my short works and my graphic novel series. That would be an excellent situation.

The book length novel I am writing is still humming along. I work it into my day on a regular basis, I am not rushing it and I am having a wonderful time. At this point, the characters are pretty much.. well, I will use the cliché… “writing themselves.” The giveaway raw chapter for email subscribers, here, is almost tightened up to my satisfaction. That will be going out by the first of next week. I’m only giving it to email subscribers.

I have to say, that getting lost in the world that one creates oneself by writing a novel is almost a guilty pleasure at this point. I spent a lot of my youth having my life suppressed by others, and I gave much of my young adulthood to society doing socially oriented volunteering. Just being immersed in my imagination and watching a vision unfold before me is a far-out experience. I’m truly grateful.

When we bring the troops home and end the wars, and then recede all our resources from all over the world, we will not only be able to cut military spending in half, but we will have so much left over that recycling it into exportable good will fuel our economy for the next 100 years.

I am doing a blog post per day all month, hopefully. Inspired by NaBloPoMo. This will be a good motivation for me to format some more ebooks. This is post #2.

Secrets for creative minds: Boring business people and the reasons you really don’t know why you need them even though you think you know

If more Artists new these secrets, they could manage themselves, get a lot more exposure and only hire a manager when they absolutely need to. More importantly, they could hire accountants.

By Robert Run (2,148 Words)

Are you more intelligent and more creative than them? Then why do you need them? Are they more intelligent? Were it not for them would you have anywhere to sell your writing, art, music, anywhere to perform, would anyone think you were really very interesting at all? You need to be more like them. They not only have the discipline and self-respect to crunch the numbers and create systems for you to function in, but they have the creativity to convince people to pay attention to you. If it were not for these “boring business drones” and their ability to promote and sell your “creativity”, no one would really think anything you had to share was worth much, at all. They do the same thing you do, only in a different way. They are not only business people, but they are also artists.

They actually use both hemispheres of their brains in ways that you do not. They can not only do their jobs, but if they’d realize it, they could do yours too, and cut you right out of the equation. Seriously, you should freak out a little bit about this and get your act more together, try to learn from this. They do the same thing you do, only in a different way. (Worth the repetition)

The last thing they want is for you to understand this, because then you might not need them as much. And you would get to keep more of your own money instead of giving it to them. Why not take what they know and make it a part of your daily schedule? You can do it, for sure. It is a lot of what you do anyway, so understand that it’s just a different process for what you do all day as an artist anyway.

Is linguistic dogma killing you?

How about not getting hung up on language, and not being offended by synonyms? Is it really worth cutting so many people off from what you create or provide just because there are certain words you hate? Why not open yourself up to more and more people? What if you are really providing something useful that could help change everything?

I remember a meeting I was in once. It was for a local food co-op in the neighborhood where I lived at that time. Somehow these people pulled this place off, but they certainly did not do it with the quickness or efficacy they could have due to their very bizarre dogma about the use of language. I remember sitting in that meeting, listening, trying to get a feel for things and seeing if there was going to be a way for me to be useful. Someone brought up the importance of Public Relations and Marketing, and how they wanted to be involved in that aspect of the business. The person who brought that up got shot down by the rude authoritarian who was running the meeting because they used the word “marketing”. “Please refrain from using words like marketing and public relations, we are not capitalists and this is not a business, it’s a cooperative, that’s what co-op means”. Now, first of all, yes they are marketers, and yes they have good public relations, because they have been in business for quite some time now. You can call what you do whatever you want. Call it “outreach”, call it “promotions”, call it “relationship building” or “communications”, but you have a reputation and you have to get the word out as well as get feedback. That is marketing and public relations in any language. Yes, they are capitalists, and yes they are business people. Yes, they are.

Have fun with semantics and pretend you are not a business if it makes you feel better, but whichever model you use for your business, it is a business model even if the structure you choose is a co-op. And whatever you call “communications” you are communicating to the MARKET, genius. It’s one of the oldest words in the history of written language.

That co-op is alive and well and all the people running it make the decisions, including the weird lady who elbowed the neighbor out of the meeting by controlling the semantics, and she makes a decent living, too. Sounds like a successful capital enterprise to me. Good for them, although when I am back in that neck of the woods I shop somewhere else, where the owners do not snap at their neighbors for using synonyms. My choice, thank you free enterprise. Who knows what kind of excellent opportunities were cut off from that group due to such petty closed-mindedness? On the other hand, what this proves is that the people at that co-op are very competitive and territorial people and that is why they have been successful. Even though they decided to limit their audience, they made it. They know their market and they took care of business. They chose not to cast a broad net. That works for them and they are happy with it.

The point is that if you want broad success, don’t do that to yourself, and don’t kid yourself about what you are and what you do to thrive. The world of doing things in an economy is a market. It’s not a bad word. There are some pretty good entrepreneurs out there who have such vivid imaginations that they fancy themselves communists or something. The world is a weird place full of people with all sorts of delusions; don’t let bizarre thinking limit your success, it’s easy to have marginal success, because most people are marginal.

Blaming business for greed is like blaming blood for mosquitoes

You see these people holding up signs that say “capitalism failed” and whatnot. It’s true to an extent, since big business has co-opted the governments, and uses them to control and centralize the economy there have been many many problems. Large centralized economies fail every single time. There are not really any examples of debt-free, entrepreneur friendly free-enterprise economies left in the world. If the right wing is not screwing it up, the left wing is.

Many of the people out there “in the struggle”, preaching the end of free-enterprise and capitalism are just as greedy opportunistic as the wall streeters and central banks who pulled the rug out from under the economy. The biggest problem they have is that they are not the ones who performed the ‘coup. Believe it. Their problem is not that there was a ‘coup, their problem is that they were not the ones who did it.

“What does this have to do with my art?” you ask. Well, a lot, because it helps you identify what you can control, and that is your business, both literally and figuratively, you get to mind your business.

How many times have you said “I could do so much better if I could afford to pay someone to do all the things I hate”? Well, this sounds weird, but sometimes you are doing things you love when you do things you hate, and you do the things you hate as you do the things you love.

  • “I love writing my poems and stories, but I hate writing sales letters.”
  • “I love being social and going to parties with people but I hate making phone calls and talking to industry people.”
  • “I love rehearsing and collaborating with fellow artists, but I hate business meetings.”

“It’s not the same thing” you say? Yes it is. It is to your brain. To your brain, physical actions are physical actions, because your brain is a physical organ. Your mind on the other hand has all sorts of imaginary constructs implanted in it to keep you from succeeding.

Can you see the point here? Have you ever considered that a CD cover is really just a business brochure? Have you ever realized that passing out flyers for your band’s next show is a marketing campaign? Am I taking the joy out of it for you? Guess what, if you don’t face this pretty soon you’ll have to get out of your creative activity, because things need to run. If you are not reminding people that you exist, they forget you. Go bag groceries.

You may as well learn how to do these things efficiently. Here’s the good part, why would you let a boring business person book your life when you can do it with flare and artistry that is unique to you? This way you may be able to save up enough cash to pay someone to be your assistant or your accountant, NOT your manager.

Let me ask you this, Artist: Do you realize that while all these people out there are having all this turbulence and struggle, stirring things up, pulling out rugs, panicking, preaching, and with all the perception preening by the masters of media that you have been a productive, genuine, creative person who is actually seeking to add value to the world rather than make hay from the destruction of values? Now, who do you think, honestly, can do a better job booking your life than you? You need tools.

TOOLS to trick your brain: Group your physical actions, because your brain does not know the difference between art and business, those definitions are constructs, but physical actions are physical actions, and the brain is a physical organ.

  • The best time to write the copy for promotional material is right after you have finished writing your song lyrics for your latest tune, finished your latest chapter, or wrote your best jokes. Keep your writing with your writing, which includes emails. Writing is a physical activity.
  • The best times to have in-person meetings or make phone calls on behalf of your projects are right after your rehearsals and collaboration sessions. Keep your social activity grouped together as much as you can. Singing with a group, collaborating, phone calls and meetings are social, physical activities. It’s all the same to your brain.
  • If you are in visual arts, then it follows to create your promotional graphics at the tail end of a long creative session. Creating graphics is a physical activity, regardless of whether it is in the realm of arts or business.

The point being made here is that the human brain likes to focus on one physical activity at a time, because the human brain is a physical organ. So see your daily actions as physical activities and design your schedule accordingly as much as you can… especially putting your promotional activity directly following your creative activity, so your brain is at its best as you do these things. Your brain does not know the difference between business actions and artistic actions, the brain is an organ, and it is not your mind. Your mind makes a distinction between these things, not your brain.

Just like physical actions, thoughts need to be organized well.

It helps to have one place to keep everything. All your work, whether it is your art or your promotional material (are we seeing less of a difference?), it needs a place to be organized, and it needs a place to be showcased. You should be able to control it all from one place and make whichever materials you desire public, private, semi-private, collaborative, or whatever you want. Social media is more important now, but at the same time, it can be fairly incomplete, and designed toward a short attention span. The good things in life take a little more work than that.

You “need a place to go”. You need a place to put your materials, to organize your materials and showcase your materials. Regardless of the function of those materials, you need a place to keep them, work on them and share them. One of the things about ebookary.com that makes it different is that it can work for more people than the short attention spans of viewers and web surfers, in terms of their flitting around the web sharing links and then forgetting them as fast.

For people who have more functional brains than that, and are intelligent and organized, and have a plan, ebookary.com is a very useful tool. It is not only a place for short attention spans, but it is also a place for people like you who have actual thoughts. Organize your thoughts. Organize your effort, describe it, store it, and showcase it. Read the about page to learn more. If you have thoughts, you’ll like it.
